Back in NJ...
The server at Daburn died again.
It's been replaced with the $300 Dell that I bought for it a few months ago...
OF COURSE when I walked my father through the process of getting it hooked up, it didn't work quite right. Something about sitting in his office for a month must have put it out of whack. I needed this like another hole in my head...
HOWEVER, at least it happened the week BEFORE I start my new job. If it had waited, I would have had trouble getting down here. I'd have to do it on a weekend which would have meant that they'd be off the net for most of a week... Which sucks - it happened when I was in Florida (thanks to DSL problems) and was painful.
This is the 4th special circumstances trip I've made to NJ this summer, in the 3-4 months since I was laid off. I'm done. This Dell server had better be as reliable as the Pentium 233 that I've spent the summer replacing. It's a P4-2.4ghz or something crazy like that, acting as a web server, mail server, DNS, DHCP, PPP (calling out to the office), and a central lookup server for my IP tracking.
The only reason the P-233 needed to be replaced was that the old server was too slow for webmail (Squirrelmail) especially over SSL.
Sigh. LONG summer. Mostly enjoyable though...

Hosting Provider
I found an amazing deal on http://www.raoli.com/archives/2003/09/000146.php ...
A few weeks ago, Seth and I were discussing the possibilities for getting some 'cheap' reliable external hosting... I found that deal on Raoli tonight, and jumped at it. Apparently it expires tonight at midnight (whereever they are) as you can see at their home page, http://www.dreamhost.com ...
As long as they were providing a free domain listing, I grabbed "danzigers.org" which I may or may not ever use, but it was the only available thing I could think of. and it's free.
If you go for it with their package, please put in "alandanziger" as the referrer. That'll get me a little money. :)
Also, if you only want to host a few pages, I can hook you up, I think. I think I'm allowed to resell (sublet?) the space. And it's only costing me $10/month. :)
Let me know if you've heard of them or have any thoughts on the subject, since I think I have something like 30 days for buyer's remorse... :)

Cool new PopCap game
Try 'typer shark' :-) http://www.popcap.com/javagames.php
I like almost all of PopCap's games, especially since they're now out for Mac and PC... I haven't tried this one on the mac yet, but I'm hoping it'll run in Safari.
Not that I need to improve my typing much; I'm consistently running around 70 WPM with 96+ % accuracy. And -no- backspacing. ;) It just beeps when I type wrong... Cool game....

Side-scrolling for MacOS X
SideTrack is a replacement driver for the trackpad found on Apple's PowerBooks.
Very cool thing, and if I were more comfortable with the trackpad on the TiBook I'd probably intall it. :)
