Back in NJ...
The server at Daburn died again.
It's been replaced with the $300 Dell that I bought for it a few months ago...
OF COURSE when I walked my father through the process of getting it hooked up, it didn't work quite right. Something about sitting in his office for a month must have put it out of whack. I needed this like another hole in my head...
HOWEVER, at least it happened the week BEFORE I start my new job. If it had waited, I would have had trouble getting down here. I'd have to do it on a weekend which would have meant that they'd be off the net for most of a week... Which sucks - it happened when I was in Florida (thanks to DSL problems) and was painful.
This is the 4th special circumstances trip I've made to NJ this summer, in the 3-4 months since I was laid off. I'm done. This Dell server had better be as reliable as the Pentium 233 that I've spent the summer replacing. It's a P4-2.4ghz or something crazy like that, acting as a web server, mail server, DNS, DHCP, PPP (calling out to the office), and a central lookup server for my IP tracking.
The only reason the P-233 needed to be replaced was that the old server was too slow for webmail (Squirrelmail) especially over SSL.
Sigh. LONG summer. Mostly enjoyable though...
