A little bit of Nothing goes a long way

OK, let me start by saying that I'm writing so that I've posted something recently, not because I have anything to say...

My project at work is going pretty well. We're two weeks into the deployment, and I'm STILL getting requirements changes. Well, that's why we're doing all this testing, so I suppose it's not a bad thing. I was disappointed to realize that the reason I've been getting great performance (140+ items per minute) was because I'd turned off the query to a third party data source. The Web Service is even more expensive than I'd thought. I'm now getting 15-20 per minute. Blech. On the other hand, the next client I write for my app won't need to call out to the web service, so it'll respond faster.

I had a performance review recently. They're very impressed / happy with me and my performance. My manager put into the review that he's looking forward to my being available to "branch out" and work more with my coworkers. Yeah, so am I......... Don't forget that YOU (mr. manager) are the one who sent out an email making me a 'protected resource' so that none of my coworkers felt that they were ABLE to include me in discussions or come to me with issues. Heh.

I got a haircut yesterday. I'm now wondering -- since everyone I've seen so far has commented on it -- that they'll think I'm interviewing. Especially since one guy knows that I'm going after work to help someone I used to work with... Shrug. If the rumor mill travels fast, maybe my raise will be better than planned. *heh* But I'm not interviewing, despite my extreme distaste for having to get up at 7am.

On the topic of commuting... Whassap with everyone? Parking sucks! I've been getting to my normal parking lot in Framingham earlier than I used to, and finding fewer and fewer spots available... Today I went to Alewife, and entered the garage at 8:04am, and didn't find a spot until the 4th floor!! 5 months ago I got there at 9 and had no trouble finding a spot. Maybe it's a seasonal thing - people getting up with the sun, & thus leaving for work earlier. No clue. I might need to start parking in the larger lot again, just to be on the safe side. Ah well.

I had a very productive trip to my dad's last weekend. I solved some of his printing problems (still not sure why the Brother laser printer isn't showing up on the network. I should have tried it from his wired Mac in addition to the wireless laptops). I explained how he can use his scanner(s). I helped him set up a DVD/VCR combo unit in his bedroom, and rotate down the older equipment, and set it up so it'll actually work. I might have even explained to him how to use it. :-) And we moved his old CD changer to his actual stereo system, and despite many issues, got it working. I got home a few hours later than I'd wanted, but it wasn't the end of the world.

Yawn. Mornings suck. Whine whine whine. (As a friend of mine said to me yesterday when I told her I'd come to whine about last-minute spec changes, "If you're going to whine, bring me a glass." That's supportive! *heh*)

What else is new? Well, my sister is pregnant, which isn't quite new but is relatively new and there might be one or two people reading my blog who don't know that. Heck, there might even be one or two people reading my blog. :-P My step-mother bought a Saab convertable - I think it's the S3 - but my dad wouldn't let her get a manual transmission because he never learned how to drive one and doesn't want to learn now. Amy's SO disappointed... She never gets to drive a manual anymore.

Wow. I started a job running copying a huge table from one database to another, and it's been going for 22 minutes already. I really hope they don't get upset at me - perhaps I should have waited until tonight to run the job. In fact, maybe I'll cancel it and do the top 5000 or so and do the rest tonight.

OK, the stream (of consciousness) is running dry... This is a lot of words, I think it'll do for now.

What's new with you?
