Over the past year, syndicated columnist Lenore Skenazy, 49, has become something of a heretic. She's an American mother of two boys, now 11 and 13, who dares to suggest that today's kids aren't growing up in constant state of near peril.
I don't entirely know how I feel about this. On the one hand, I totally agree - the world isn't significantly 'worse' than when people my age were growing up.
On the other hand, all-those-years-ago neighbors all knew each other, by sight if not as friends/acquaintances. A stranger in the area stuck out. It might not have been a kinder, gentler time but there also wasn't the same aura of fear around that I think is prevalent now...
